Laszlo Hangody was born on May 20, 1958 in Kiskunhalas, Hungary. He graduated from medical school in 1982 at Semmelweis University with a summa cum laude. In 1986, he specialized in orthopedics, then in 1988, he specialized in traumatology with excellent results. In 1994, he defended his Ph.D. thesis concerning the experimental and clinical background of cartilage repair surgery. In the same field, with his further research and innovations, he acquired his Doctor of Sciences degree from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He became the Head of the Orthopedics-Traumatology Department at Uzsoki Hospital in 2001. In 2003, he habilitated at University of Debrecen, Faculty of Medicine, and in this same year he acquired his university private professor degree.
He has contributed to the graduate and postgraduate education program at Semmelweis University in orthopedics as well as traumatology, and continues to hold lectures for students’ at all four Hungarian medical universities since 1990. In 2010, he was nominated to be the Head of Department of Semmelweis University, Department of Traumatology as well as Director of Traumatology at Péterfy Sándor Hospital Traumatology Center. In 2013, as further acknowledgment of his academic work, he was the first Hungarian musculoskeletal surgeon to become a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
The fact that he has been the president of the Hungarian Orthopaedic Association and the Hungarian Arthroscopy Association demonstrate his dedication and active support for his profession. He has additionally been elected president of the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Professional Association. He has been elected for executive board member of several international associations including ESSKA, ICRS and EFORT Trauma Task Force. He has participated in the editorial staff of numerous Hungarian and international journals also.
His professional career has been recognized by Hungarian associations and universities granting him the Dollinger Award, Lumniczer Award, Markusovszky Award and Jendrassik Award. He has also been rewarded the University of North Carolina Oscar Miller Award, has been nominated as a honorary member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and since 2011, his department had been selected as a FIFA Medical Centre of Excellence. Other domestic achievements include Prima Award (2011), Gábor Dénes Award (2015), Szabó György Award (2016), Széchenyi Award (2017), Batthyány-Strattman Award (2017), and the Academy-Patent Award (2017).
He is consultant orthopaedic surgeon of the DrRose Private Clinic since 2010 and serves as medical director since 2015. Two of his sons, Laszlo Rudolf Hangody M.D., Ph.D. and György Márk Hangody M.D., Ph.D., also work in the DrRose Private Clinic as orthopaedics consultants.
He speaks fluently english, and on a moderate level german.
He is father of three sons. His wife, Andrea Ficzere M.D., Ph.D., is specialist in neurology and rheumatology, working as healthcare manager.
Since the start of his career, Laszlo Hangody has supported and stood by a unified musculoskeletal surgery outlook. Next to his active daily medical work, he has educated in both professional fields of orthopedics and traumatology, and the challenges of both professions had determined his basic and clinical research. His principal international innovations concerned cartilage repair and ligament surgeries, but he has reached remarkable advancements regarding implant and instrument development for knee arthroplasty. His development of Mosaicplasty has been one of the most frequently used modern cartilage repair technique in the last 27 years. The collaborative research with his colleagues as well as his research topic supervision for doctoral (Ph.D.) work has led to significant worldwide innovations concerning biodegradable matrixes and ultra-fresh osteochondral allograft transplantations used for cartilage repair.
