Dermolipectomy

Dermolipectomy is a plastic surgery procedure in which excess skin and, where necessary, excess fat are removed to create a firmer, more harmonious body contour.

The procedure may be recommended following significant weight loss, when stretched or excess skin is no longer able to adapt to the body’s new shape. Excess skin can cause more than aesthetic concerns: it may interfere with movement, physical activity and clothing, while skin folds can also lead to irritation and chafing.

Dermolipectomy is not a weight-loss procedure. Its purpose is to remove excess skin that has already developed and restore a more balanced and proportionate body contour.

When is dermolipectomy recommended?

Dermolipectomy may be an appropriate solution for patients who have significant excess skin following substantial weight loss. Skin elasticity is influenced by several factors, including age, genetics, previous body weight and the extent of weight loss. As a result, excess skin may persist even after reaching a stable weight and maintaining regular physical activity.

Dermolipectomy may be recommended if:

  • significant excess skin remains following substantial weight loss,
  • loose skin interferes with movement or makes physical activity uncomfortable,
  • skin folds are regularly affected by irritation or chafing,
  • excess skin makes dressing and everyday activities less comfortable,
  • body weight has stabilised and further lifestyle changes are unlikely to significantly improve the body contour.

Which areas can be treated with dermolipectomy?

Depending on the location and extent of the excess skin, dermolipectomy can be performed on different areas of the body. Significant excess skin can, for example, be removed from the abdomen, torso, upper arms or thighs.

Following substantial weight loss, it may sometimes be necessary to address several areas of the body. In such cases, our plastic surgeon develops an individualised treatment plan. To support safe recovery, procedures involving different areas may be performed in separate stages.

What is the difference between dermolipectomy and a tummy tuck?

Although the two procedures may have some similarities, they are not the same. A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) specifically addresses the abdominal area. In addition to removing excess skin and fatty tissue, the procedure may also involve tightening the abdominal wall muscles.

Dermolipectomy is a broader term referring to the surgical removal of significant excess skin and, where appropriate, fatty tissue. Unlike a tummy tuck, it can be used to correct excess skin in areas other than the abdomen.

The most appropriate surgical technique is determined by the plastic surgeon based on the patient's individual anatomy and the area requiring correction.

What happens during the first plastic surgery consultation?

During the initial consultation, our plastic surgeon examines the area to be treated and assesses:

  • the amount and distribution of excess skin,
  • skin elasticity,
  • any excess fatty tissue,
  • previous surgical scars,
  • your general health,
  • as well as your expectations and desired outcome.

Based on this assessment, an individualised surgical plan is developed.

During the consultation, your surgeon will explain the procedure in detail, including the expected outcome, the location of the surgical scars and the main stages of the recovery process.

When planning body contouring surgery following significant weight loss, it is particularly important that your body weight is as stable as possible before surgery.

How should you prepare for dermolipectomy?

A pre-operative medical assessment is required before dermolipectomy. The exact examinations required will depend on your age, general health and the type and extent of the planned procedure.

During the consultation, your plastic surgeon will also advise you which medications or dietary supplements may need to be temporarily adjusted or discontinued before surgery.

Smoking can significantly impair wound healing, so stopping smoking before and after surgery is particularly important.

At Dr. Rose Private Hospital, the examinations required as part of your surgical preparation can be arranged in one place and, where possible, during a single appointment, making the preparation process simpler and more convenient.

What happens during dermolipectomy surgery?

Dermolipectomy is generally performed under general anesthesia. The exact surgical technique depends on the area being treated and the amount of excess skin and fatty tissue that needs to be removed.

Following the pre-operative surgical plan, the plastic surgeon removes the excess skin and, where necessary, part of the underlying fatty tissue. The remaining tissues are then repositioned and secured to create a firmer and more balanced body contour.

The incisions are planned carefully so that, where possible, the resulting scars are positioned in areas that can be concealed by clothing.

Depending on the extent of the procedure, temporary surgical drains may also be placed in the treated area.

How long does dermolipectomy surgery take?

The duration of dermolipectomy varies considerably depending on the size of the area being treated, the amount of excess skin to be removed and the surgical technique used.

Your plastic surgeon will be able to provide a more precise estimate of the expected operating time following your personal consultation and once the surgical plan has been established.

Is hospital stay required after dermolipectomy?

Dermolipectomy is generally considered a major plastic surgery procedure, and hospital observation is therefore usually required after surgery. The length of your hospital stay will depend on the extent of the procedure and your individual condition.

At Dr. Rose Private Hospital, your initial recovery takes place in our premium inpatient facilities, with continuous medical and nursing care in a comfortable and peaceful environment.

Recovery and healing after dermolipectomy

Swelling, a feeling of tightness, tenderness and minor bruising may occur following surgery. These are common parts of the healing process and generally subside gradually.

Depending on the area treated, you may also be advised to wear compression garments during your recovery.

During the first few weeks, you should avoid:

  • strenuous physical activity,
  • intensive exercise,
  • lifting heavy objects,
  • and any movement that places significant strain on the operated area.

The timing of your return to work depends both on the extent of the surgery and the nature of your occupation. You can gradually resume sporting activities once your plastic surgeon confirms that it is safe to do so.

What kind of scar can be expected after dermolipectomy?

The removal of significant excess skin requires a surgical incision of an appropriate length, meaning that dermolipectomy inevitably results in a permanent scar.

Your plastic surgeon will plan the incision carefully so that, where possible, the scar is positioned in an area that can be concealed by clothing. Scars may initially appear redder and more prominent, but they usually gradually fade and soften over the following months.

When will the final results of dermolipectomy be visible?

Changes in the body contour can be noticed immediately after surgery. However, the final result cannot be assessed at this stage because of the initial swelling.

As the swelling gradually subsides, the new body contour becomes increasingly defined. It may take several months for the final result to develop.

Are the results of dermolipectomy long-lasting?

The excess skin removed during dermolipectomy does not grow back in the same form. With a stable body weight, the results can therefore be maintained over the long term.

However, significant subsequent weight fluctuations, pregnancy and the natural ageing process may continue to affect body shape and skin firmness. For this reason, dermolipectomy is ideally performed once a stable body weight has been achieved.

Frequently asked questions about dermolipectomy

Does dermolipectomy cause weight loss?

No. Dermolipectomy is not a weight-loss or weight-reduction procedure. Its purpose is to remove significant excess skin and, where appropriate, fatty tissue that remains following weight loss.

When can dermolipectomy be performed after weight loss?

The procedure is generally best considered once you have reached your desired weight and maintained it for a period of time. Your plastic surgeon will determine the appropriate timing based on your individual condition.

Can excess skin be removed from several areas at the same time?

Certain procedures can be combined. However, when extensive body contouring is required, a staged surgical approach may be recommended to support a safer recovery. Your plastic surgeon will discuss the most appropriate approach with you during your consultation.

Will I have a scar after dermolipectomy?

Yes. Surgical incisions are required to remove significant amounts of excess skin, so some scarring is inevitable. The incision is planned so that, where possible, the scar can be concealed by clothing.

Can I gain weight again after dermolipectomy?

Yes. Maintaining a stable body weight is one of the most important factors in preserving the results over the long term. Significant subsequent weight fluctuations can alter the body's contours again.
