Dementia Prevention Program

Dementia is a syndrome characterized by mental decline, degeneration, and ultimately dementia, i.e., a retrogression from a certain cognitive and intellectual level. It is caused by the progression of a serious brain disease that impairs memory, thinking, orientation, understanding, recognition and calculation skills, thus changing both personality and behavior. Dementia typically affects people over 60 years of age, but it can occur at a younger age. The main risk factor for dementia is old age, but certain chronic diseases – such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, kidney failure, obesity and other metabolic and hormonal diseases – can increase the likelihood of developing dementia, however the development of dementia is also closely linked to lifestyle.

Our Dementia Prevention Program was developed with the help of the renowned Hungarian-American expert, Prof. Dr. István Boksay, a retired professor of psychiatry at New York University (NYU). Professor Boksay's area of expertise is dementia, and his research has contributed to the understanding of the course of dementia, its risk factors, and the pathophysiological conditions that influence and facilitate the disease.

Our program assesses patients’ current mental/intellectual state, uses complex diagnostic tests to identify individual risk factors for developing dementia, and creates a personalized prevention plan. In a revolutionary new development specifically designed to detect Alzheimer's disease early, we are testing for a biomarker called Amyloid-beta, the accumulation of which can indicate the onset of the disease several years before symptoms appear, allowing the earliest effective treatment.

Genetic factors cannot be influenced, so their examination is not part of the program.

The aim of our Dementia Prevention Program

  • We assess brain functions, i.e., attention, perception, memory, and thinking.
  • We determine the individual risk factors that can cause memory problems and dementia.
  • We suggest ways to improve and maintain your health and mental well-being. Based on this, we will draw up a personalized risk assessment and prevention plan, with the expert advice of a US dementia specialist. Only genetic factors cannot be influenced.

To whom do we recommend our Dementia Prevention Program?

  • Anyone who is concerned about their mental/intellectual state and/or has high risk factors for developing dementia.
  • Those who have one or both parents or any close relative with memory problems/dementia.

What tests does the Dementia Prevention Program include?

  • Complete internal medical history and physical examination, including ECG
  • Detailed assessment of mental and memory functions
  • Extensive laboratory testing of blood and urine, including the new, Alzheimer's disease-specific Amyloid-beta test
  • Specialized contrast-free brain MRI scan
  • Detailed neurological examination, including ultrasound of the carotid arteries
  • In-person internal medicine evaluation including a summary discussion of the results and the prevention plan.

The tests take 2-3 weeks and require 2-3 in-person visits. The assessment of the findings takes another 4-5 weeks, after which we evaluate the results during a personal consultation.
