Two years ago marked the last major expansion at Dr. Rose. Now, though, you're not merely growing – you're evolving to a whole new level. Can you tell us a bit more?
Seven years ago, our current owners took over the management of the hospital. From the beginning, our aim has been to create a system that delivers the highest quality care while maintaining efficiency. Key to this is balancing our surgical and inpatient numbers to ensure no resources go unused. After all, unused capacity ultimately means higher costs for patients. Instead, we channel those savings back into our operations, allowing us to maintain competitive pricing without compromising on excellence.
What developments were implemented during the last expansion?
The initial expansion focused on outpatient facilities, followed by the addition of patient rooms to complement our existing operating theatres. Thanks to steady growth, those spaces are now fully utilised. We decided last year to undertake a new expansion – this time, looking to the long-term. We are building capacity that will serve us well into the future. Major surgical and inpatient systems must be developed as integrated blocks because meeting today’s strict medical standards requires complex infrastructure that can support multiple operating rooms, and a large number of beds.
How does this new expansion differ from the one in 2023?
We are keeping and continuing to use our existing operating rooms and patient areas – we’re very fond of them. However, surgery requiring more space and advanced equipment will be relocated to a new 1,500-square-metre wing. The existing and new departments, including both current and new operating theatres, will function as a single integrated matrix – they’ll be both operationally and physically connected.
One thing remains unchanged: our commitment to uncompromising professional quality across all areas. That’s why we invest heavily in both infrastructure and human resources – aspects patients may not see directly, but which are essential to the safety and reliability of care. We are deeply honoured by our patients’ trust, and we take that responsibility seriously.
With the addition of new operating theatres, a central sterilisation unit, and high-specification perioperative care units, we will be equipped to safely perform virtually every type of surgery possible in a private healthcare setting. This will also allow us to further expand our medical portfolio. Our goal is to offer something in every speciality – whether added value, or unmatched levels of care – that patients can’t find anywhere else.
With 23 new patient rooms and two new operating theatres, how will you reach the patients who haven’t yet come to Dr. Rose?
Thanks to our consistent efforts over the past years, we’ve managed to double our revenue, and we believe this growth trajectory will continue. More and more people are discovering the exceptional quality of the care we provide – and our surprising value for money.
In the past, our hospital operated at significantly higher prices, but today our fees are in line with those of our competitors. We’ve made a conscious decision to make Dr. Rose accessible to anyone who chooses private healthcare – and when patients place their trust in us, we aim to exceed expectations in a way that earns their lasting loyalty.
We’re confident that patient safety will become an increasingly important factor in healthcare decisions – especially for complex procedures that can only be safely performed in full-service facilities like ours. We are prepared for the unexpected. Our hospital has specialists on-site 24/7, and we offer intensive care when needed. Surgical teams and diagnostic services remain on call overnight and throughout weekends. We also keep patients in hospital longer than usual and offer a 24/7 hotline after discharge to assist with any concerns.
All of these conditions are standard for every patient – and we encourage them to verify these safeguards when choosing a hospital for their own peace of mind.
Is Dr. Rose Private Hospital focused on patients from Budapest, or does it operate at a national level?
Many of our patients travel from outside Budapest. For them, we provide a seamless service – including comprehensive pre-operative diagnostics and post-operative check-ups, all co-ordinated in advance. We also welcome international clients and are partnered with several major global insurance providers. Increasingly, they are referring patients not just for outpatient care, but also for surgical procedures.
How does the new inpatient unit raise the bar for surgical care?
Dr. Rose already offers a broad spectrum of surgeries, covering nearly all traditional surgical disciplines. The new theatres will build on these foundations, offering enhanced capabilities and safer environments for more complex procedures.
Orthopedics, plastic surgery, general surgery, gynecology, urology, and ear-nose-throat are currently our main surgical specialties, and we’re now expanding our capacities within each of these. Our new department – designed for high-dependency care and staffed with specialist physicians at all times – enables us to treat more medically complex cases, including those requiring advanced anaesthesia.
That said, we always prioritise patient safety. If a case falls outside what we can safely manage in-house – for example, if it requires the constant presence of multiple specialist teams or an intensive care ward – we do not proceed with the operation.
What technological investments are part of this development?
We are especially discerning when it comes to adopting popular medical devices and techniques. Our core principle is that every case must be treated according to evidence-based protocols, which offer the most reliable outcomes.
We only recommend technologies beyond these standards if they are medically necessary, as they entail additional costs for the patient. Our priority is to ensure every tool, material, and team member needed for standard procedures is available at the highest level – including the resources required to manage any complications. This alone demands substantial investment. Medical standards are constantly evolving, and we continually update our equipment accordingly.
Will any new types of surgery or sub-specialities be introduced in the new theatres?
It’s difficult to list every new or specialised procedure we offer, but some standout examples include cartilage replacement surgeries developed by Professor László Hangody and his team, surgical treatments for gynecological incontinence, holmium laser procedures for prostate and kidney conditions, and interventions designed to reduce snoring.
How will you staff the new operating theatres?
One of Dr. Rose’s greatest strengths is the cohesion of our current team, so our first priority is to build on this foundation. That said, we welcome new professionals who are eager to work in the kind of supportive, high-standard environment we offer.
Our goal is for surgeons to be able to focus solely on their clinical work. Once a diagnosis is made, our surgical care co-ordinators take over – organising pre-operative testing, scheduling procedures, and providing each patient with a dedicated point of contact who remains available even after surgery.
We also support physicians with documentation and ensure our nursing teams meet the highest professional expectations. All new staff are vetted by our department heads to ensure they can integrate seamlessly into our collaborative teams. This allows for mutual cover, so that patient care is uninterrupted even during a doctor’s absence.
In Hungarian healthcare, it’s common for a new development to be followed by years of stagnation. Why do you believe this marks not just an expansion, but a new chapter for Dr. Rose?
When we decided to move forward with this investment, we committed to a long-term vision – and we remain unwavering in that belief. We recently extended our lease for another ten years in one of Hungary’s most prestigious office buildings, reflecting our deep commitment.
This entire development is being financed from our own resources – with no government support or loans – demonstrating the dedication of our owners.
Dr. Rose Private Hospital is now 18 years old, the oldest comprehensive private hospital in Budapest. We are an important employer and taxpayer, and by offering private care, we help relieve pressure on the public system.
We are responsible for our patients, for our colleagues, and we firmly believe that we are creating something of lasting value – something that can serve as an example for others. As long as there is a need for our care, we will continue to grow.
