Acromioclavicular joint pain

The acromioclavicular joint, also known as the AC joint, is located between the collarbone (clavicle) and the bony projection of the shoulder blade (scapula) that forms the highest point of the shoulder.

Repeated, high levels of stress on the joint can eventually lead to cartilage damage and degenerative changes. Repetitive overhead movements and exercises involving heavy weights can place particularly significant strain on the joint.

What Symptoms Can Occur?

Symptoms usually develop gradually. Initially, pain around the top of the shoulder may occur mainly after physical activity or exercise. Over time, however, the pain may become increasingly persistent.

How Is It Treated?

Conservative treatment can provide satisfactory results in many cases. This may include avoiding movements that trigger pain, pain-relieving medication, and injections into the joint.

If symptoms persist despite these measures, arthroscopic surgery may become necessary. The aim of the procedure is to create adequate space between the bony surfaces that form the AC joint, thereby eliminating the painful contact between them.
