FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Psychologists say that first impressions are so powerful that it is almost impossible to change them afterwards. When we meet an unfamiliar person, it takes us about eight seconds to form an opinion about them, based on their appearance - mostly their face. And the harmony of our face is largely determined by the shape and size of our nose. Our appearance also has an influence in our daily lives, and a harmonious appearance affects our confidence and self-esteem.
WHY THE NOSE AND WHAT'S WRONG WITH IT?
Almost everyone has a part of their body they don't like, and for many of us it's our nose, which takes shape around the age of 16 or 17 and stays with us for life. We can use make-up on our eyes. We can make our lips look fuller, plumper or more curvaceous with a super lipstick or, if we're looking for a long-term solution, a lip plumper. The only part of our body that we can't quickly change in our everyday lives is our nose. However, our nose is the part of our body that fundamentally defines the character of our face. Many of us feel that it can't be perfect: too wide, too big, but often it only takes an old accident or a tiny bump on the bridge of the nose to make us feel uncomfortable and long for a daintier or even a masculine nose with character. While a tiny nose on a woman's face is pretty and feminine, on a man's face it can have the opposite effect. Strangely, one study of evolution has even found that we find creatures with round, small noses to be much nicer and more loveable. This is so true that it's worth watching cartoons or animated films, where nice, friendly people always have round noses, unlike the baddies, who have big, characterful noses.
WHAT COULD BE THE SOLUTION?
As already mentioned, the shape and size of our nose is a major determinant of our overall facial appearance. This is compounded by the fact that, like the ears, this part of our body can grow throughout our lives, so someone with a prominent nose may be even more unhappy with its overall appearance as they get older. Deformities and irregularities of the nose can be surgically corrected with rhinoplasty.
