Instrumental termination of a miscarriage (spontaneous abortion)

In the early stages of pregnancy, unfortunately the embryo can cease developing and die inside the uterus. This condition is often asymptomatic and can be diagnosed with an ultrasound scan. Two types of cases may arise during the ultrasound scan: either an empty gestation sac is detected in which the embryo has not even started to develop, or the heart function of a previously developed embryo has stopped. If the development of the fetus stops by the 12th week of pregnancy, but the body does not initiate the natural rejection of the pregnancy tissues, then surgical intervention may be necessary, depending on the doctor's recommendation and the patient's condition.

What tests are required before spontaneous abortion surgery?

Since the surgery is performed under general anesthesia, a general laboratory test is required to check the patient's current health status. In addition, blood group determination and blood group antibody testing are also required.

How is spontaneous abortion surgery performed?

Treatment for a spontaneous abortion is a one-day surgical procedure, so the patient can leave the hospital the same day, following 5-6 hours of observation. The instrumental termination of the miscarriage is performed under anesthesia. This is preceded by appropriate cervical preparation, which involves gently dilating the cervix with medication to minimize the risk of later complications, such as cervical insufficiency. After appropriate preparation, the dead pregnancy tissue is removed from the uterine cavity, which is always sent for histological examination. At the end of the procedure, the uterine cavity is also disinfected, ensuring the safety of the entire procedure and faster recovery.

What should the patient do after surgery?

It is recommended to avoid sexual intercourse, submerged bathing and lifting heavy objects for two weeks after surgery. Light bleeding may occur for a few days after the procedure. Full recovery is usually rapid, and the patient can quickly resume their daily activities, provided they are symptom-free.

What are the risks of spontaneous abortion surgery?

Like all surgical procedures, surgical termination of a miscarriage can result in bleeding, injury, and inflammatory complications. These risks are minimized with preoperative and postoperative antibiotic treatment and disinfection according to protocol.
