Breast reduction

While many women feel uncomfortable if they have small breasts, there are also those who experience problems with an excessively large bosom. Breasts that are too big can negatively affect everyday life and may even cause health problems. For them, plastic surgery can provide a suitable solution with a breast augmentation procedure, breast reduction, which can reduce the bust by up to a cup size.

When is breast reduction warranted?

Although for the majority of cases, small breast size is more likely to affect self-esteem in women, breasts that feel too large can trigger inhibitions, while also causing back pain and spinal problems. A large bust can make it difficult to choose fashionable clothes and often also to play sports. Breast size can be reduced surgically to create the desired shape. After breast reduction, previous health problems such as back and spinal pain disappear, the posture improves and based on the feedback from our clientele we can say that they have become more confident, their previous complexes have disappeared, their self-confidence has grown, and this has positively affected all areas of their lives.

What happens at the first consultation?

Our plastic surgeon will examine you during a personal consultation and show you, based on their references, what your expected best outcome will be if you decide to have surgery. They will then discuss personalized options, explain the different surgical techniques and show you where the surgical scars will be located. They then discuss possible reasons for exclusion and possible complications.

Preparing for surgery

As with all surgeries, before breast reduction you will need to undergo a full examination, which includes laboratory tests, ECG and x-rays if necessary, and ultrasound and mammography. In our private hospital, we perform all the necessary tests at the same time to save you time and make your preparations for surgery more convenient. You will then receive some lifestyle tips to help you prepare for breast reduction surgery and to speed up your recovery. These include quitting smoking - at least temporarily - as nicotine slows the healing processes, consuming adequate amounts of fluids, vitamins and trace elements (vitamin C, selenium, zinc) and avoiding the use of aspirin, ginkgo biloba and other natural remedies, because these affect blood clotting.

What happens during surgery?

During breast reduction under anesthesia, our plastic surgeon performs the incision along the so-called inverted T-line, i.e. starting below the areola and heading vertically in the direction of the inframammary fold, where it continues with a horizontal incision along this fold beneath the breast. The adipose tissue and part of the mammary gland, as well as excess skin, are then removed. The plastic surgeon forms the aesthetically pleasing, shapely breast from the remaining mammary gland. Breast reduction in most cases does not affect the ability to breastfeed later. Our plastic surgeon uses only absorbable sutures, sparing you the inconvenience of later suture removal. The whole intervention takes 2.5-3 hours.

Recovery, regeneration

After breast reduction surgery you will need to spend one night in our private hospital, where you can relax in pleasant and comfortable surroundings. The surgical site should not be exposed to water for one week. You will need to wear a special bra - which we provide for you - for eight weeks. During the first two weeks it is important to avoid all strenuous physical activity, then you can gradually resume your previous rhythm of life, and after three weeks light exercise is allowed. Neither the solarium, sunbathing, nor the sauna are advised for two months. Our plastic surgeon will call you back for a postoperative examination at specified intervals. The visible scars heal after approximately 6 months, while those under the skin heal within about 2 years. Although we try to filter out all risk factors during preoperative breast reduction examinations, unforeseen complications may occur. At the first consultation your plastic surgeon will inform you about these and how to avoid them.

After breast reduction, a scar line remains on the skin in some visible and invisible places. Surgical scars are permanent but gradually fade over time. The breasts gain their final shape after six months.
