Somnology is a science that studies sleeping disorders. A somnologist is concerned with the examination and treatment of sleeping disorders and disturbing irregularities.
Such disorders are snoring and irregular breathing, insomnia, inappropriate actions during sleep (sleepwalking, screaming, eating while asleep, sexual or harmful behavior), daytime fatigue, a tingling sensation in legs after going to bed, that ceases with movement. The latter is known as restless legs syndrome.
A somnologist diagnoses and treats all of these problems, consulting other specialists if necessary.
