When is it justified?
Wrinkles or stretching of the skin on your belly to a disturbing degree might be caused by an earlier pregnancy or a bigger change in your weight. Getting out of shape is not only an aesthetic problem, but it might make doing sports uncomfortable, and dressing fashionably hard. However, these inconveniences can be dealt with by removing excess skin and adipose tissue while tightening the muscles of your abdominal wall as well. Our plastic surgeon examines you during a preliminary consultation and shows you his reference works to illustrate the expected best outcome.
Before the surgery, you have to undergo a complete and throughout screening. To make the process more comfortable for you, we perform all the necessary screenings at our Institute in the same place and time. Besides laboratory tests, our surgeon might recommend you to have an ECG examination and an ultrasound screening. You also have to have a consultation with the anesthesiologist before the surgery. Your plastic surgeon will also inform you about the advised temporary adjustments in your lifestyle to speed up your recovery.
The course of the intervention
During a tummy tuck, a vertical incision is made from one hip bone to the direction of the other, through which the excess adipose tissue and skin are removed, the abdominal muscles are strengthened. Usually, an additional liposuction is also needed in the waist area. You also have to note that a tummy tuck is usually performed in two or more phases: after the first surgery, you might need an additional intervention in 6 months, such as liposuction or scar correction.
The surgery is performed in anesthesia. The plastic surgeon makes a perpendicular incision on your torso in level with your hips. Then he removes the excess skin and adipose tissues, rejoins the separated or stretched abdominal muscles and fixes the navel in its original anatomic position. Finally he inserts the surgical drains that remain in your abdominal wall for 48 hours. The absorbable sutures we use will spare you the unpleasantness of having the stitches removed. The complete intervention takes 4-6 hours.
Recovery and aftercare
After the intervention you spend one night in our hospital where you can relax in a calm and exclusive environment. It is also advised to keep sleeping in a half-sitting position for 3 weeks and bend your back a little while you are in a standing position. In the morning following your tummy tuck, our specialist puts waterproof bandages over your scars that allow you to have a shower without having to worry about them. We provide you with the compress garment that you will have to wear for 8 weeks. It is important to avoid any strenuous physical activity for the first two weeks and even after this period, return to your previous lifestyle gradually, but 3 weeks after the surgery you can have some light exercise. It is not recommended to visit a tanning salon or sauna for two months. Your control examinations will be scheduled for the 7th and 14th days after the intervention, and two additional ones during week 6 and 12. Your visible scars will disappear in approximately 6 months, and the skin-deep scars will heal in 2 years.
The risk of complications is very low, but if there is any, it can only be wound infection, whey and blood accumulation, a keloid scar or a temporary loss of feeling in the abdominal wall.
