When is it justified?
Mainly the shape and size of your nose lends your face its character. Moreover, just like your ears, this body part keeps on growing through your entire life, so if your nose has been prominent from the beginning, you might be more and more unsatisfied with it as time progresses. As you age, the tissues that make your face plump will wither, thus your nose will become more accentuated. However, surgery can correct every deformity of the nose. Our plastic surgeon examines you during a preliminary consultation and shows you his reference works to illustrate the expected best outcome.
Before the surgery, you have to undergo a complete and throughout screening. To make the process more comfortable for you, we perform all the necessary screenings at our Institute in the same place and time. Besides laboratory tests, our surgeon might recommend you to have an ECG examination and an ultrasound screening. You also have to have a consultation with the anesthesiologist before the surgery. Your plastic surgeon will also inform you about the advised temporary adjustments in your lifestyle to speed up your recovery.
The course of the intervention
There are two available surgical techniques, closed nasal surgery being more common: it is done through incisions made on the mucous membrane to avoid visible scars. However, if a more throughout exposure is necessary, an open surgery is performed by making additional incisions on the patch of skin that separates the nostrils. In both cases, the process is continued by the partial removal of the connective tissue and the shaping of the tip of the nose. If the length of the nose is shortened, it might mean that part of the nasal septum also has to be removed. Bony outgrows and crooks of the nasal bridge can be grated, and the nose can be narrowed by breaking and re-fixing the nasal bone on both sides. During the intervention, septal deviations can also be corrected. The absorbable sutures we use will spare you the unpleasantness of having the stitches removed. At the end of the surgery, tampons are inserted into the nostrils to avoid a nosebleed, and for one or two days a dressing or splint will ensure that your bones and cartilage stay in the new shape. The intervention is performed in anesthesia and takes 1 – 1 and a half hour.
Recovery and aftercare
Following the intervention you spend one night in our hospital where you can relax in a calm and exclusive environment (If you had a minor surgery in local anesthesia, a 6 hour observation might be enough.). Bruises might appear around your eyes, and dark circles may be visible in the area for a few weeks. Although the swelling of your nose will gradually decrease in a few days time, the final shape will not be visible until later.
It is important to avoid any strenuous physical activity for the first two weeks and even after this period, return to your previous lifestyle in small steps. However, light exercise is allowed after six weeks, but you should not play any ball sports for 8 weeks. It is not recommended to visit a tanning salon or sauna for 2 months. Your control examinations will be scheduled for the 7th and 14th days, then during weeks 6 and 12 after your surgery. Visible scars will disappear in 6 months, while the skin-deep ones will completely heal in 2 years.
The risk of complications is very low, but if there is any, it can only be wound infection, whey and blood accumulation or a keloid scar. The attained shape of your nose can be considered final after 12-18 months.
